SPF Overload? Ask the Expert...Dr. Kenneth Beer

The skin care lesson your mother always told you...wear sun screen! Not only do you need to wear it (everywhere), you need to reapply it every hour or so, if you're out in the heat or at the beach because the wind, sand and salt water will take that protective sheild right off, leaving your skin vulnerable to sun burn.

However, I work in an office and not at the beach. The most sunlight I receive in a workday is at 6am on my five block walk to Spinning, streams of light through the window near my desk (on a nice day) and by the time I head home the sun is beginning to set. Yet, I still wear SPF all over my face. I make sure all of my daily moisturizers are SPF-friendly and always have chapstick or lipgloss in my oversized Rebecca Minkoff with sun protection.

The problem with my SPF overload? Vitamin D levels can suffer from not enough sunlight and overuse of SPF.

According to Palm Beach-based dermatologist and Professor at University of Miami, Dr. Kenneth Beer, says that Vitamin D deficiency is on the rise. "Practice moderation and get some sun exposure, but avoid getting burned. You should also get your Vitamin D levels checked and if you're deficient, and if so replace it with oral supplements. It's easy to do and essential to your wellness. Avoid getting burned," Dr. Beer explains.

Where else can you get Vitamin D? Milk, citrus fruits, salmon, tuna, a whole egg, sardines...the list goes on!

Chill out on the SPF until you hit the beach! Advice from our very own expert.

Prevent Summer Sun Damage Before It Happens: Ask the Expert

By TheGlamtastic · July 24, 2009 · 0 Comments ·
Ask the Expert: Dr. Zein Obagi
I love my freckles, I always have. But when I learned that the oh-so-cute tan speckles sprinkled across my nose are actually sun damage, I stopped loving them so much. In fact, I even started to fear the sun spots lurking on my face.

How can women prevent nasty sun damage, sun spots, discolorations and flaky peeling skin before it starts? To answer the serious skincare questions, we went straight to the expert, Dr. Zein Obagi.

Q: How can women prevent summer sun damage before it happens?
A: Rule 1 - Keep antioxidants in your diet (aka healthy, bright-colored fruits and veggies) and in your skin care. Look for skincare products that contain DNA repair enzymes, co-enzyme Q10 and vitamin E.
Rule 2 - Wear a hat with a big, broad visor and if you're going to spend time at the beach, stay under an umbrella.
Rule 3 - Apply (and re-apply) sunscreen.
Rule 4 - Don't buy products that make exaggerated claims such a waterprood and all-day sun protection.

Q: What products should women avoid when they're spending a lot of time in the sun?
A: Don’t go into the sun if you have been recently had a peel, microdermabrasion, or are using retinoic acid.

Q: If the worst has happend, what ingredients should women look for in their beauty products to reverse dry skin, sun spots and excessive freckles?

A: If you have dry skin, use products with retinol (an active form of Vitamin A) and moisturizers with ceramides, phosphslipids and anti-inflammatory agents). For sunspots, use a physical sunblock.

To lighten age spots or correct photo-aging, retinol or tretinoin are the best treatments.  When your freckles stop being cute, look for products with active Vitamin A (retinol), use a powerful sunblock, and consider superficial peels.

Q: What are your favorite summer skin savers?
A: For the body, I like Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sun Block SPF 30. For the face, try my own Oclipse Sunscreen SPF 30 - it's a sunscreen, tinted moisturizer and primer all in one.

What's your biggest summer skin dilema? Tell us about it!

Zein Obagi, MD is the quintessential maverick of skin care. Twenty years ago he pioneered the concept of skin health and developed a line of medical skin care products that transformed aging skin. At that time, he merely intended to challenge the norms of traditional skin care. Instead he shattered the status quo. Today his old ideas about skin health are no longer surprising; they've become mainstream. Around the world, his name is the unofficial synonym for results-oriented skin care. Now he's done it again with ZO Skin Health™– the first retail line of anti-aging skin care products that brings Rx-inspired, results-oriented technology to go above and beyond traditional cosmeceuticals. Today, his standards are still as high, but his philosophy isn't quite so controversial. Because beauty–and health–are two things the whole world can agree on.

Every great magician has their secrets, and so does every A-list makeup artist!
So, we went to one of Manhattan's top beauty gurus, Kimara Ahnert, who has worked with starlets such as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Gwyneth Paltrow and Amanda Peet (just to name a few) to learn her masterful makeup tips and tricks.

Q: Where do we begin?
A: Take a cold shower in the am to make skin tighter and brighter.

Q: After a summer spent in the sun, how do you suggest we alleviate sun damage?

A: To lighten age spots and sun-damaged skin, mix the juice of 1 lemon, 1 lime, 2 tablespoons of honey, and 2 ounces of plain yogurt. Gently massage into each spot. Use at least once a week.

Q: If we spot a pimple, what is the best way to conceal it?
A: To remove the redness from pimples, rub a tiny spot of visine on the pimple.

Q: What's the secret to achieve an even skin tone?
A: Use a good primer before applying foundation. This step will give you a smooth surface to apply your foundation on. Apply makeup with a damp latex free sponge as this will allow a more even application of the foundation.  Set your makeup by applying a dusting of loose translucent powder, like Kimara’s Mineral Powder Foundation Loose SPF8, with a fluffy brush all over the face.

Q: Whether it's for a monster meeting or a hot date, how do we make our lipstick last longer?
A: To make your lipstick last longer….If you have a lip pencil line the lips then fill in the lips with the pencil then you can apply your lipstick. Or apply a lip primer only and use lipstick. Or a third option is to line lips with a pencil apply a layer of lip primer then apply lipstick. Any step of these steps individually will help make your lipstick last.

Q: How do we keep our lip color from feathering?
A: To prevent feathering and bleeding of darker lip color, apply a lip primer or concealer to lips first.

Lashtastic?

By TheGlamtastic · June 12, 2009 · 0 Comments ·

I’ve always wanted longer, thicker lashes – who hasn’t? Now, there is an FDA-approved Miracle Grow for your lashes called Latisse, produced by Allergan (the makes of Botox and Juvaderm). The drug is traditionally used to treat glaucoma, but now women are demanding its beauty benefits!

But is it safe? Will I need to trim my lashes?

I decided to go to the expert, Dr. Kenneth Beer, a cosmetic dermatologist, professor at The University of Miami, founder of The Cosmetic Boot Camp and author of Palm Beach Perfect Skin.

So, tell us Dr. Beer…

Q: What is Latisee?

A: Latisse is bimatoprost, a prostaglandin type of molecule. It is the first and only drug approved by the FDA to grow eyelashes.

Q: How does it work?

No one really knows exactly how Latisse works, but when used consistently it increases the length, thickness and darkness of the eyelash hairs.

Q: Is it safe? Why or why not?

It is safe to use, but as with any product, can have some women can experience issues such as irritation.

Q: What results can patients really expect?

A: Thickening and darkening of the lashes begins at 8 weeks and really becomes prominent at 16 weeks.

Q: How long do results typically last? To maintain longer, thicker lashes Latisse should be used continuously. As long as usage is maintained, patients can expect lash enhancement.

Q: How much does the treatment cost?

A: It costs about $120.00 per bottle, which can last 1-2 months.

Q: Do you apply the treatment in your office or do patient apply it at-home?

A: Latisee is applied at-home, but it can only be dispensed in office or at pharmacy.

Q: Have you had patients who need to trim their lashes?

A: Not yet.

Q: Are there any over-the-counter products that can produce comparable results?

A: The over-the-counter products that produce similar results are knock offs that copied the molecule without conducting the FDA testing or registration, so it is hard to know much about them.

Have you tried Latisee? Tell us about it!!!
